The solvatochromic fluorescence properties of amino- and imide-iV-alkyl-substituted phthalimides were studied by several groups. The response of 4-aminophthalimide (63) in aqueous solutions of various substituted alkanes was used by Saroja and Samanta66 to monitor their coiling and aggregation. The solvatochromic shifts of 3-amino-lV-methyl-phthalimide (64) were studied in mixtures of decalin and propanol by Gorbatsevich and Smirnova67.

Highly substituted alkyl fluorides, called perfluoroalkanes, are often used as artificial blood substitutes. These perfluoroalkanes have the ability to transport Oj through the bloodstream as blood does. Some even have twice the O2 transport capability and are used to treat gangrenous tissue. Organolithium reagents can also react with hydrocarbons to give 15-50% yields of alkylated products. For example, /er/-butyl-lithium is reported to react with naphthalene in decalin solution at 165 C for 41 hr to give 30% yield of mono-/ r/-butylnaphthalene and a 50% yield of di-ferf-butylnaphthalene. The position of substitution was not reported. The generality of this reaction has not been explored beyond benzene, phenanthrene, and perylene.
