Deadlock

Kenzo s parents won a new trial in 2003 because of the actions of a juror showing bias toward the gun maker. The second trial ended in a mistrial when the jury deadlocked. Finally, in 2004, a third jury found in favor of Beretta USA Corp. after a brief deliberation. 

Lack of certainty - as an agreed precondition for precautionary action - could lead to phasing out of substances or uses but could at the same time hamper substitution by alternatives because their properties are often even less well documented. There was broad consensus that premarketing measures ensuring the availability of an adequate set of information were seen as the prerequisite for overcoming this deadlock. 

Inevitably there will be some contractual situations where disputes arise due to some perceived or real default on the part of one of the parties. When there is no clear path to a resolution through negotiation because the disagreement is sufficiently intractable, one recourse is to arbitration. In most contracts the potential for such a deadlock is recognized by a clause which is inserted to specify both the authority which under whose jurisdiction the arbitration will be heard, the location of the hearings, in which language they will be heard and under the laws of which country. 

The trial against me was not a real trial. The main session of the trial ended in a deadlock. The sentence was equivalent to the destruction of an 80-year old man. I was not permitted to defend myself against charges consisting of lies, harassment, and attacks on my honor. The court denied me the possibility of defense by means of sec. 186 of the German Penal Code. It refused to put my assertions to the test of examination.

Turbulence theory provides a classical approach to mixing phenomena. This is a natural way for mechanical engineers and specialists of combustion, who are very familiar with the methods of fluid mechanics. However, when complex chemical reactions are involved, the use of the formalism of turbulence alone seems to lead to a deadlock, as has been pointed out by several authors. An excellent presentation of the state of the art can be found in the recent literature especially by Brodkey (16, 2, 27) and Patterson (3). These reviews reveal no major breakthrough, and only slow progress on a difficult road. 

Another closure approximation relies on the use of higher order moments, but this is almost a deadlock as for only two reacting components, a 13-equation model is required (3). 

The Enders research group realised that an increased nucleophilicity on the carbene carbon atom would improve the benzoin condensation overall and might give the necessary impetus to break the apparent deadlock by initially increasing the yield and in its wake the chiral resolution. This was achieved by switching to triazole based NHC instead of the less nucleophilic thiazole based NHC (see Figure 6.3) [17-19]. The scheme proved to be successful as an ee of 75% (R) in 66% yield and a catalyst loading of 1.25 mol% could be achieved.

Deadlock A halting condition in a parallel program when two or more processors are waiting for data from each other. For example, if processor a is waiting for a message from processor b and processor b is waiting for a message from processor a, then a and b are deadlocked.

However such a completeness produces deadlock,with the result that we get the idea to break the harmony. But breaking the harmony should never be opposite to the principles described above. Risk assessment deseribes the challenges to environmental decision-making today. Included in these challenges are a national tradition of narrowly focusing on separate environmental problems, the danger of deadlock on crucial environmental issues, and a divergence of public and scientific views on what are the most risky environmental problems. 

Deadlocks can appear in the case of asynchronous, cyclic service calls. 

But, would it. ..and do we want that I don t know if it would. I suspect in many cases it could help considerably and for this reason I m a strong advocate of running some well conceived experiments. But, at the same time, I have ny doubts. Sometimes parties talk past each other, confuse Issues of value and fact, read different meanings into the same results, and intentionally misunderstand the science because that appears to be the only way to reach a compromise solution. If a common analytical framework forced everyone to directly face and debate the real Issues. ..such as how much should society and individuals Invest to save various kinds of lives In various circumstances... we might find ourselves deadlocked more often. Then again, focusing more often on the real Issues might clear the air. We won t know until we try. 

To break the deadlock, the executors renewed their efforts to negotiate some kind of agreement with the Swedish Nobel relatives, who were on the verge of starting a legal action to contest the will. After much haggling a compromise...
