Dead comer

The total number of collisions with the dead comers is proportional to the total number of drops in the surface layer opposite the dead comers and—when the theory of local isotropic turbulence holds here also—proportional to the turbulent fluctuation frequency u/d. Near the wall, however, the theory of local isotropic turbulence certainly will not hold and —more or less—stationary large scale eddies will occur. Therefore, centrifugal effects will strongly increase the collision rate when the dispersed phase... [Pg.294]

As seen today, Chamber IV is very irregular in shape. It has two dead comers, is closed on three sides, and therefore very difficult to ventilate. This one, exactly identical to the hair-cutting room in hut 42, shows blue pigmentation on the ceiling and plaster of the northern wall. This blue pigmentation is also found in the plaster on the southern wall, but is on the outside of the wall of Chamber IV. An even more intense bluish pigmentation finally appears in the plaster of the eastern wall, in the vestibule. [Pg.426]

The volume of the detector cell should have a negligible influence on peak broadening and should, therefore, amount to less than 10% of the elution volume of the narrowest (first) peak. A cell volume of 8 pi is standard. Too small a cell volume impairs the detection limit (as a certain amount of analyte is needed to produce any signal at all). The figure must be well below 8 pi for microHPLC. The cell must have no dead comers which may prevent the peak being fully removed by subsequent eluent. [Pg.95]

Of course there may be reasons, to pay attention to the minimum values of volume flows. It is conceivable that the flow velocities in low resistive connection elements becomes so small that other system requirements cannot be Mfilled, e.g. the number of analyses per hour, the procedures to clean the system and the suppression of sedimentation in dead comers. [Pg.76]

Vulnerability of physical, chemical and, in cases of MIC, biological conditions of the system towards corrosion for instance, when the design of a piping system is such that it produces dead comers where a fluid like water can become stagnant and MIC becomes very likely. [Pg.83]

Here the thermometer must be mounted in such a way that no (colder) plastic can be deposited on it, or that such plastic will be continually rinsed off. The disadvantage of this process lies in the necessity of building in structures that lie in the compound flow and increase the flow resistance, and also increase the risk that dead comers will form. This causes more difficulties on smaller machines than on larger ones. This is because the quantity of compound which is still in front of the screw tip after initial injection (which should certainly be kept as small as possible) is generally increased by the addition of these stmctures. The effects involved are more negative with smaller injection equipment or a smaller spme fraction than with larger injection equipment. [Pg.153]

Willie C. Shealey, employee of Avondale Mills, age forty-three, of Graniteville, was found dead in low, swampy woods near the Woodhead Division Plant. He was the Shift Third Supervisor and had been with Avondale Mills for eighteen years. Mister Shealey was also a member of the National Guard 122 Engineering Battalion in Graniteville, South Carolina. He was a comer in the plant in all respects, and rumor has it he could do any... [Pg.37]

I raced along the straight to the T junction where I had first met my mysterious cat helper. I swung left around the comer and a lantern was uncovered right in my face, dazzling me. I stopped dead. [Pg.116]

I was sweating. I had never had a worse conversation with anyone and the knowledge that a state inquisitor was lurking just around the comer was not making me feel better. Madonna, do you know anyone who might have had reason to want your son dead ... [Pg.113]

A waft of musty air greeted me. I stepped inside, ny heart thudding. The torch revealed a single room, enpty except for dead leaves curled on the floor. I shone the Hght around the bare walls, aixl then the beam fell on a second door, hidden away almost invisib in a comer. [Pg.93]

Is an envelope which has a piece of flat steel inside with all 4 edges sharpened. It can be carried in a shirt pocket or coat pocket. It Is used in the hand striking with the comers or thrown like a shirkin and is deadly. [Pg.42]

Potential dead spots in comers and on the immediate bottom of the blender Can be difficult to clean. [Pg.168]

Convection blenders have some drawbacks associated with their use. Many of the older designs have dead spots due to limited movement of materials in these areas. Problem locations include the comers of the blending vessel and the clearances... [Pg.176]

In southern Scotland, we drove around a comer and found a woman lying apparently dead on our side of the road just ahead of us. She d probably been run over. It was a tremendous moral dilemma, but I felt I couldn t afford to... [Pg.196]

The analysis of electrodiffusion measurements results, in terms of the mass transfer intensity, especially at high current densities, demonstrates that the design of bipolar plate with spots-like channels is preferable, regardless the possibility of existence dead zones in comers of bipolar plate. However, as the measurements of cell resistance caused first of all by contact area between bipolar plates demonstrate, the channel flow field structure generally leads to better performance of the fuel cell in comparison to spots- and meander-like structure. [Pg.207]

If an instrument is used for both normal-phase and revetsed-phase chromatography, special care should be taken when converting the instrument from a reversed-phase mobile phase to a normal-phase mobile phase. If any water remains in any comer of the fluid path, it can later bleed slowly into the normal-phase eluent and contaminate the column. Dead-ended T-connections in the fluid path, used, for example, to attach pressure gauges, are a common source of this problem. [Pg.394]

FQ series mine pneumatic fan is developed by China University of Mining and Technology, the working medium and the power of the motor are compressed air. Output shaft are installed at the both ends of fan, fan blade is installed in the front end and linen wind wheel driven by the fan airflow is installed in the back, and there has an incomplete circular air outlet in the linen wind wheel. Thus, blade and line wind wheel would be rotated by the fan when the fan is working, and a certain frequent and disturbed jet which can reach the range of 8 meters to 15 meters would be generated in a conical area, so it is suitable for blowing dead space of ventilation, especially for harmful gas accumulation in upper comer. [Pg.116]

With the feeler gauges, check for the maximum amount you can get in at all four comers at the top and bottom of the slide. Do not worry if you cannot insert a feeler gauge at one or more positions because the slide will never hang dead center in the gibbing area and will always have some clearance at some other gib location. (See Figs. 5 and 6.)... [Pg.302]

Firms that used to compete with Sandler for deals now put the crippled firm in their deals to get it some money. Just as important, they gave it information— market color, as traders like to call it. What was the spread on the A-rated trust preferred bonds What was the last bid How big were the blocks That kind of crucial information is what Sandler s traders used to see on their computer screens now, with the traders dead and the computers destroyed, the firm needed its rivals to convey the market color over the phone. Its competitors went one step further. They made sure we weren t being taken advantage of, says Joel Comer, the bond salesman turned trader partner and, once again, fixed income salesperson. ... [Pg.5]

The width of the contact area can thus be reduced, i.e., the risk of undersupply is locally reduced by shorter diffusion ways. As the gases are not forced to overflow the whole active cell area through channels between the inlet and the outlet of the active cell area, they take the way with the lowest resistance. Then, comers are streamed/passed through much less. This may result directly in undersupply or it may result in collecting liquid water ensued by undersupply. Therefore, cell stmctures with porous layers usually have several inlets and outlets to avoid dead zones, but... [Pg.327]
