De la Place

If at any time I have adopted, without acknowledgement, the experiments or the opinions of M. Berthollet, M. Fourcroy, M. de la Place, M. Monge, or, in general, any of those whose principles are the same with my own, it is owing to this circumstance, that frequent intercourse, and the habit of communicating our ideas, our observations, and our way of thinking to each other, has established between us a sort of community of opinions, in which it is often difficult for every one to know his own. ...

In 1781 de la Place published the description of a much improved calorimeter. A picture of it can be found in the writings of Lavoisier [4] and is shown in Fig. 4.27. The outer cavity, a, and the lid, F, are filled with ice to insulate the interior of the calorimeter from the surroundings. Inside this first layer of ice, in space b, a second... 

Mr. Cavendish has. . . further observed, by using dry closed vessels, that a sensible quantity of moisture (une portion d humidite sensible) deposits on the walls. Since the verification of this fact would be of extreme importance for chemical theory, M. Lavoisier and M. de la Place proposed to confirm it by a large experiment (constater par une experience en grande).. . . Finally [i.e., after this experiment], it has just been learnt from a letter written from London by M. Blagden to M. Berthollet, that M. Cavendish had lately repeated (avoit repete dernierement) the same experiment in a different way, and that, when the quantity of the two airs was well proportioned, he had constantly obtained the same result. ... 

Berthollet opens the 1788 publication by saying that experiments on the nature of water and de la Place s explanation of the origin of the inffammable...

Some (Lavoisier, Bayen, de la Place, Monge, Meusnier, etc.), whose number increases daily, deny that phlogiston is contained in sulphur, phosphorus, metals, plants, sugar, charcoal and fixed air, although they admit a fixed fire in bodies as they admit inflammable air in water and seek a carbon in metals (in den Metallen einen Kohlenstoff suchen). They do not at all reject it from conviction but rather from obstinacy (Eigensinn) and love of novelty (Neuerungsliebe). ...
