A hybrid plasma reactor was developed for the synthesis of fine ceramic powders (59). The reactant SiCl4 was injected into a DC-arc plasma jet and decomposed completely in a hybrid plasma an RF-plasma superimposed on the DC-arc plasma. The reaction with the second reactant NH3 and/or CH4 gas, which was injected into the tail flame of the plasma, formed Si3N4 UFPs and/or Si3N4 + SiC mixed UFPs, with structures that were amorphous. 

An Ar stabilized direct current (DC) arc plasma at atmospheric pressure was employed to determine Cu, Fe, and Mn in wine [81]. The experimental conditions were optimized by studying the lateral distribution of the spectral line intensities of the elements assessed in aqueous and ethanolic-aqueous solutions. The method was applied to quantify Cu, Fe, and Mn in six wines from three Serbian grape-growing regions and the accuracy was checked by FA AS. 

As the radiation density is low, it can be accepted that the dc arc plasma is in thermal equilibrium. The excited states are produced predominantly and decay through collisions with neutrals.

The stabilized DC arc plasmas form a heterogeneous group of plasma excitation sources. They differ greatly in construction, with variations from the conventional DC arc to the free-burning flame-like plasmas. Their spectroscopic properties are also different. 

Biggs and co-workers used a DC arc plasma detector to measure iron, nickel, vanadium, and sulfur profiles from SEC of petroleum and its distillation and adsorption chromatography fractions [118-123]. They found that the metal species were present as three distinct molecular sizes. They identified the low molecular weight ones as metalloporphyrins. They also measured the variety of siliconpolysiloxane polymers and synthetic alkyl- and arylsulfonates [124].

The use of plasma for synthesis of ceramic powders has been reviewed by Phillips and Vogt [120]. All of the reactions just discussed can be performed in a plasma.
