Missing data

The overall conclusion is that there is already some data available on the influence of stress on adherent cells but there is still important data missing to understand the behavior of adherent cells in bioreactors.

The simplest case in which we can overcome such distortion is when we initially have insufficient data to enable us to correctly ascertain the position of the end point. Figure 4.4, for example has some data missing, which explains why the peak is pencilled in with dashed lines. In such a situation, we simply repeat the titration, taking care this time to obtain more data at volumes close to the suspected equivalence point. 

Solution The only data missing is the temperature at the surface, r, where the carbon oxidation is taking place. This can be obtained by equating the flux due to mass transfer to the mass flux due to heat transfer, that is, equation 15.5. By plotting the maximum times for the various rate limiting steps (given in Table 15.7) as a ftinction of the surface temperature, T, as shown in Figure 15.11 for Tg = 400°C, this flux equivalence is assured by an intersection of mass and heat transfer lines for values of t as a fimction of surface temperature. 

The programs use the NIPALS algorithm and can treat data matrices even if there are some data missing.

Due to the data missing for the phenomenological models and the fact that these models are mostly not verified, the empirical and semi-empirical models are probably the best for the rapid practical applications required in risk assessments. Information in Tables 1 and 2 are data based on full scale fire tests carried out from approximately 1990 to present. Ref. 2 also presents data for other five fire types, but only the data summarised in Table 1 are used in this Paper as they show together with the data in Table 2 the widest range.

Although there was a large number of data (missing data were pairwise deleted) not all correlation coefficients between considered variables were found to be statistically significant. In all cases the availability of a sufficient number of data points and the quality of the data determines how good the model is that will be developed. If industrial process data is collected, one can almost be certain that there will be sections of data missing or faulty data may be included in the data set. In that case one needs to pay considerable attention to data pre-conditioning.
