Discriminant emalysis is a supervised learning technique which uses classified dependent data. Here, the dependent data (y values) are not on a continuous scale but are divided into distinct classes. There are often just two classes (e.g. active/inactive soluble/not soluble yes/no), but more than two is also possible (e.g. high/medium/low 1/2/3/4). The simplest situation involves two variables and two classes, and the aim is to find a straight line that best separates the data into its classes (Figure 12.37). With more than two variables, the line becomes a hyperplane in the multidimensional variable space. The rotational relaxation of DNA from 1 to 150 ns is due mainly to Brownian torsional (twisting) deformations of the elastic filament. Partial relaxation of the FPA on a 30-ns time scale was observed and qualitatively attributed to torsional deformations already in 1970.(15) However, our quantitative understanding of DNA motions in the 0- to 150-ns time range has come from more accurate time-resolved measurements of the FPA in conjunction with new theory and has developed entirely since 1979. In that year, the first theoretical treatments of FPA relaxation by spontaneous torsional deformations appeared. 16 171 and the first commercial synch-pump dye laser systems were delivered. Experimental confirmation of the predicted FPA decay function and determination of the torsional rigidity of DNA were first reported in 1980.(18) Other labs 19 21" subsequently reported similar results, although their anisotropy formulas were not entirely correct, and they did not so rigorously test the predicted decay function or attempt to fit likely alternatives. The development of new instrumentation, new data analysis techniques, and new theory and their application to different DNAs in various circumstances have continued to advance this field up to the present time. [Pg.139]

Feighner and Cohen [1989) performed a pooled-data analysis of six studies of buspirone in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. The most efficient way to speed up spin diffusion is the so-called r.f.-driven spin-diffusion experiment [15, 19] where the chemical-shift differences are removed by r.f. irradiation. For small chemical-shift differences, r.f.-driven spin diffusion can be implemented by applying a continuous-wave r.f. field to the S-spins which can theoretically be described by a transformation into a tilted rotating frame (see Appendix B). To zeroth-order average Hamiltonian theory the chemical-shift differences are removed (fl, — fty = 0 for all spins i and j) and the dipolar-coupling frequencies are scaled by a factor s = -1/2. The scaled-down (or ideally vanishing) chemical-shift difference allows one to keep the zero-quantum line narrow by decoupling the protons. This results in fast spin-diffusion rates. Furthermore, the rate constants are now determined by the S-spin coupling network, and the proton spins need not be considered for the data analysis. [Pg.93]

Until recently, unfolding algorithms presented convergence problems to trivial solutions (equidistant products). But this problem seems to have been solved (Busing et al, 2005).
