Events involving deliberate or accidental distribution of bacterial pathogens into our everyday environment have clearly defined the need for a sensitive, specific, and rapid method of bacterial detection. Were it not for a sudden and incriminating outburst by its leader that led to a full investigation by state and federal authorities, it is possible that the Oregon Salmonella typhimurium outbreak would have never been solved (Miller et al., 2001).
