Dabigatran etexilate is another promising oral Tl which is being evaluated in experimental and clinical studies, although the presently available data are still limited and not as comprehensive as for ximelagatran and its active form melagatran.

In 2008, dabigatran (BIBR-953) had also been approved by the FDA for use as an anticoagulant for the treatment of thromboembolytic diseases.It is marketed as a double prodrug, dabigatran etexilate.
