Observations of pneumatic dryers proved that a considerable amount of total moisture removed evaporates in the cyclone separator. Several new dryer types were constructed that apply the principle of vortex flow. In addition, the cyclone dryers have particle separation features. Centrifugal force keeps large and wet particles rotating whereas small and dry particles can be carried away with gas. Adjustment of gas velocity can thus change the critical particle size as well as residence time in the dryer. 

With other short-time dryers, the product motion is in the form of a vortex flow driven by the hot gas which increases the residence time. This can be achieved with hot gas jets tangentially entering the drying area (vortex flow dryers such as helical flow tube with nozzles and annular flow dryer [5.77]), with displacement internals including gas guide vanes (spiral tube pneumatic dryer [5.78, 5.79]), or with tapered inclined perforated screen (cyclone dryer [5.80]). These factors are important in relatively passive equipmrait, such as storage silos, mixers, and settling chambers. More active equipment, such as crushers, grinders, cyclones, dryers, bagging and packaging equipment, and certain conveyors can produce much more dust.
