Cycloalkanes general formula

In cycloalkanes (general formula C H2 ), the carbon atoms at the end of a chain are attached together to form a closed loop. This connectivity reduces the ease with which the molecule changes conformations by rotation about single bonds and introduces both steric and angle strain into the total energy of the molecule. Consequently, cycloalkanes have particular preferred conformations such as boat and chair, and the molecule must absorb energy to move between them. [Pg.307]

Cycloalkanes (ornaphthenes). These are also known as cycloparaffins or saturated alicyclic hydrocarbons." They are quite stable compounds with the general formula with n > 3 for rings without substituent groups. The first two members are... [Pg.308]

Saturated cyclic hydrocarbons are called cycloalkanes, or alicyclic compounds (aliphatic cyclic). Because cycloalkanes consist of rings of -CH2- units, they have the general formula (CH2) , or and can be represented by polygons... [Pg.108]

A cycloalkane is a saturated cyclic hydrocarbon with the general formula C H2 . In contrast to open-chain alkanes, where nearly free rotation occurs around C, -C bonds, rotation is greatly reduced in cycloalkanes. Disubstituted cycloalkanes can therefore exist as cis-trans isomers. The cis isomer has both substituents on the same face of the ring the trans isomer has substituents on opposite faces. Cis-trans isomers are just one kind of stereoisomers—isomers... [Pg.131]

Cycloalkane A saturated hydrocarbon containing a closed ring. General formula = C H2 , 584-585 Cyclopentane, 584 Cysteine, 622t... [Pg.685]

Cycloalkanes are cyclic saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula C H2 . Therefore, a substance with the formula C3H8 could not be a cycloalkane, since C3H8 conforms to the general formula, C H2 +2, the molecular formula for an alkane. It is, however, too small to be a branched alkane with a methyl group attached to the longest chain. In fact, C3H8 is propane. [Pg.388]

How is the general formula of a cycloalkane similar to the general formula of an alkene ... [Pg.322]

Cycloalkanes are hydrocarbons with the general formula ChH2h. If a 0.500 g sample of any alkene is combusted in excess oxygen, how many moles of water will form ... [Pg.275]

Cyclic hydrocarbons are called cycloalkanes they are examples of alicyclic (g/ phatic cyclic) compounds. Cycloalkanes, having the general formula are isomeric with alkenes but, unlike... [Pg.166]

Cycloalkanes are alkanes that are cyclic with the general formula C H2 . The simplest members of this class consist of a single, unsuhstituted carhon ring, and these form a homologous series similar to the unbranched alkanes. The C3 to Ce cycloalkanes with their structural representations are shown below. [Pg.66]

The cycloalkanes also are known as naphthenes, cycloparaffins, or alicyclic hydrocarbons. In the petroleum industry, this class of hydrocarbons is known as naphthenes. Naphthenes have saturated rings. The general formula for the ring without substituents is CnH2n. This is the same as the general formula for the alkene series however, the structural configurations differ completely and, thus, the physical and chemical properties are not at all similar. [Pg.24]

Cycloalkanes arc a got up of cyclic saturated hydrocarbons with a general formula of Which of the... [Pg.33]

The formulas in parts a and d fit the general formula CnH2n+2 and are alkanes. C7H12 (part b) and C8H16 (part c) have two fewer hydrogens than called for by the alkane formula and must be either an alkene or a cycloalkane. [Pg.21]

A cycloalkane has two fewer hydrogens than the corresponding alkane. Thus, the general formula for a cycloalkane is CnH2n. [Pg.22]

These are cyclic alkanes (hydrocarbons) and are also called alicyclic compoimds. Their general formula in CH2n. In these the carbon atoms are linked to form a rings of various sizes. The six membered carbon ring being most commonly found. Most of there cycloalkanes are unreactive to chemical reagents. [Pg.52]

You should have no trouble recognizing cyclohexane as a member of the alkane family. Notice, however, that cycloalkanes, such as cyclohexane, have two fewer hydrogen atoms compared with other alkanes. Thus they have the general formula CnH2n. (This is the same as the general formula for alkenes.)... [Pg.562]

Write the general formulas for the alkane, alkene, alkyne, and cycloalkane homologous series. [Pg.633]

A. Cycloalkanes have the general formula CnH2, if they have one ring. [Pg.64]

Carbon atoms in alkanes can be attached to one another in a ring formation and such compounds are called cycloalkanes. The general formula of cycloalkanes is C H2 . [Pg.41]

Both alkenes and cycloalkanes have the same general formula, Therefore... [Pg.57]

Cycloalkanes contain carbons joined in one or more rings. Because their general formula is C H2 , they have two fewer H atoms than an acyclic alkane with the same number of carbons. [Pg.115]

Cycloalkane (Sections 4.1, 4.2) A compound that contains carbons joined in one or more rings. Cycloalkanes with one ring have the general formula C H2 . [Pg.1199]

The general formula for alkanes is C H2 + 2-Determine the general formula for cycloalkanes. [Pg.734]

The cyclic saturated hydrocarbons, or cychalkanes, have the general formula C 2n-cycloalkanes (and other ring compounds that we will encounter later) are often shown in simplified skeletal form in which each intersection of two lines represents a C atom we mentally add enough H atoms to give each carbon atom four bonds. The first four unsubstituted cycloalkanes and their simplified representations are... [Pg.1048]

Recall that the cycloalkanes may also be represented by the general formula... [Pg.1052]

Methane, CH4, is the simplest of the alkanes, a family of hydrocarbons with the general formula C H2 +2, Cyclopropane, C3Hg, is the simplest of the cycloalkanes, a family of alkanes whose carbon atoms are joined in a ring. Alkanes and cycloalkanes are saturated hydrocarbons. [Pg.965]
