Cutter speed at the outer radius is recommended at twice the conveyor belt speed for through-stream extractions from moving belts. The cutter is adjusted in a lateral angle to a 30-degree position, matching the cutter extraction path through the material bed on the belt at specified speed.

The Matsuzaka Elbow-Jet classifier (Fig. 11) is based on a transverse flow principle (26). The stream of feed particles are accelerated to minimize the effect of gravity, and introduced into an air jet at right angles. The particles are fanned out in the classification zone with the trajectories for particles of the same hydrodynamic behavior, ie, size and shape, being the same. Classification is achieved by mounting one or more cutters in the classification zone, thus dividing the feed into two or more fractions. A stream of fine particles of less than 5 Jm can be produced in this manner. 

A single ciystal prepared in this way is already oriented for example, it is oriented parallel to the face of the cleaved mica ciystal base. Ciystals starting on this seed are pulled out of a melt. Another method of forming a single ciystal is to have it cut and polished. Cutting is done with a spark cutter on the ciystal cradled in the arms of a goniometer, which allows the angle of the spark cutter to be precisely oriented in the direction of the desired plane. 

The preferred method for cutting the helical baffles is to use a milling machine with an indexing head and a 1/8" thick disc cutter. The tangent table angle is set to 87 for proper cutter clearance. Dip the diamond tool in turpentine before each cut. Scratch and break one line at a time. Make only one scratch mark. Find out the correct angle and pressure for the tool. Use new glass. Chip off small pieces of waste with old pliers or side-cutters.
