Crystallization batches range from 30,000 to 60,000 Hters for each pan. Continuous centrifugals are typically used for second, third, and affination steps continuous vacuum pans are less common but are used in the U.S. for intermediate strikes. Most horizontal batch crystallizers have been replaced by continuous units, and all are designed for controlled cooling of the massecuite to maintain supersaturation. [Pg.28]

Batch Crystallization Batch crystalhzation has been practiced longer than any other form of ciystaUization in both atmospheric tanks, which are either static or agitated, as well as in vacuum or pressure vessels. It is still widely practiced in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industry or in those applications where the capacity is veiy small. The integrity of the batch with respect to composition and history can be maintained easily and the inventoiy management is more precise than with continuous processes. Batch ciystalhzers can be left unattended (overnight) if necessary and this is an important advantage for many small producers. [Pg.1667]

Given the complementary nature of molecular recognition, it would appear that, when a compound crystallizes, the crystallization pathway, and hence the crystal structure obtained, should be quite specific to the molecule in question. However, the very existence of the phenomenon of polymorphism indicates that, under certain conditions, alternative crystallization pathways are feasible. In the special circumstance of concomitant polymorphism, or the simultaneous appearance of polymorphic forms in the same crystallization batch, these pathways even co-exist.1321 So, in general, the study of polymorphic systems has a bearing on a better... [Pg.301]

Crystallization from an overall viewpoint represents transfer of a material from solution (or even a gas) to a solid phase by cooling, evaporation, or a combination of both. But there is more to it. Of considerable importance are economics, crystal size distribution, purity, and the shape of the crystals. Impurities or mother solution are carried along only in the surface or occlusions in the crystals. The partical size distribution depends on the distribution of seed crystals, which are injected into the crystallizer prior to initiation of crystallization (batch) or continuously from recycled undersized particles, the mixing in the system, the crystal growth rate, and the degree of supersaturation of the mother liquor. As in shown in the figures, both batch and continuous crystallization are used in industry. [Pg.42]

Once the indomethacin forms are available, seeding a crystallization batch with the desired form will usually result in the isolation of that form. When excess solid Form II and Form III, either individually or as a mixture, are stirred (agitated, equilibrated) in most solvents and for sufficient time, they convert to the more stable Form I. The time to conversion is roughly related to solubility conversion time is faster for the solvents with higher indomethacin solubility. In water (Table 3-1), where the solubility is relatively low. Form n and Form III of indomethacin did not convert even after 24 hours of stirring. [Pg.54]

Absolute asymmetric [2 + 2] photodimerizations of achiral compounds in crystals have been known since 1982. [12] Achiral compound 1 crystallizes in the chiral space group P2. Crystals of 1 obtained from the melt or from ethanol on irradiation give either (+)- or ( )-2 with enantiomeric excesses (ee values of 0 to 95% and higher). The result varies from crystallization batch to crystallization batch however, 100% ee of the (+)- and the... [Pg.89]
