Crystal engineering supramolecular devices

This chapter does not cover the use of metal ions as allosteric effectors (3), skeletal components (4) (see Crystal Engineering, Supramolecular Materials Chemistry), or sensing elements (5) (see Molecular Redox Sensors, Colorimetric Sensors and Luminescent Sensing, Supramolecular Devices). It also does not address the interaction of metal complexes with biological systems (see Synthetic Peptide-Based Receptors, Biological Small Molecules as Receptors, Molecular Recognition and Supramolecular Bioinorganic Chemistry, Supramolecular Aspects... 

In our disgraceful times, if you must write a research proposal, you should not call it A study of fundamentals of intermolecular forces , but Methods in supramolecular crystal engineering for the development of nanomolecular materials, devices and biotechnological anticancer drugs . I have refereed many such abstruse documents, in which some colleagues well known to me for being fine quantum chemistry specialists boast their ability to fabricate nanotubes or to cure AIDS. 

The Fullerenes form particularly strong complexes with porphyrins as exemplified by the X-ray crystal structure of the covalent Fullerene-porphyrin conjugate 15.8 (Figure 15.29).48 This property allows fullerenes and porphyrins to form extended supramolecular arrays (even when not covalently linked) and has been used to engineer host-guest complexes in which a Fullerene is sandwiched in between a pair of porphyrins, and ordered arrays involving interleaved porphyrins and Fullerenes. Applications include the use of porphyrin solid phases in the chromatographic separation of Fullerenes and potential applications in porous frameworks and photovoltaic devices.49...
