Crystal disorder

In addition to the dynamic disorder caused by temperature-dependent vibration of atoms, protein crystals have static disorder due to the fact that molecules, or parts of molecules, do not occupy exactly the same position or do not have exactly the same orientation in the crystal unit cell. However, unless data are collected at different temperatures, one cannot distinguish between dynamic and static disorder. Because of protein crystal disorder, the diffraction pattern fades away at some diffraction angle 0max. The corresponding lattice distance <7mm is determined by Bragg s law as shown in equation 3.7 ... [Pg.81]

The structure of /3-cristobalile has been determined several times over the past 60 years, but crystal disorder has led to Uncertainty in the space group assignment (Hyde, B. Q. Andersson, S. Inorganic Crystal Structural Wiley New York. 1989 pp 393-395. [Pg.597]

Illers and Jenckel have discussed the internal frictions peak in the region of the crystal disordering transition. They analyzed the shape of the loss peak at various frequencies in terms of two different distributions of relaxation times existing above and below the transition. Nagamatsu, Yoshitomi, and Takemoto have also discussed this change in the distribution of relaxation times as revealed by measurements of stress relaxation. [Pg.481]

Crystal size, crystal disorder, and field effect mobility of pentacene films grown on the surface of ion-beam treated and native Si02- Dichroic ratio signifies alignment of pentacene perpendicular to the ion-beam direction. [Pg.147]

The minerals in bone change as an animal ages. Juvenile or immature bone contains amorphous calcium phosphate or the mineral brushite (CaHPO 2H20). Mature bone contains the mineral hydroxyapatite (Ca5(P04)3(0H)), but with some modifications. There tends to be some internal crystal disorder within bone apatite, and the carbonate radical may substitute for phosphate. Calcium deficiency and other health problems may affect the composition and properties of bone. [Pg.135]

In the cubic phase there is plastic crystal disorder and as IVeinstock has pointed outl t the entropy of fusion of this phase is not very different from the value of 3.3 e.u. found for the noble gases. [Pg.243]
