Corrosive Sublimate and Calomel. A method for preparing a rather pure mercurous chloride (calomel) was known to Parisian physicians before 1608 (83). Oswald Croll prepared it by a secret process, and Jean Beguin in his Tyrocinium Chymicum, which was published in 1608, described the process. This mild sublimate was made by rubbing corrosive sublimate with as much mercury as could be "killed or made to combine with it (240, 241, 242). Calomel, corrosive sublimate, and vermilion have been manufactured for centuries at Hankow, China (243). [Pg.52]

Oswald Crollius, or Croll, (1580-1609) was another influential advocate of Paracelsus, and a contributor to the chemical remedies. His Bascilica Chemica, Frankfurt, 1608, often republished, was his most popular work. It contained an exposition of the teachings of Paracelsus, a treatise on materia medica in which he emphasizes the chemical medicines, and a treatise on the doctrine of Signatures, a subject also treated in the Paracelsan literature, and which assumes that medicinal plants or other sources... [Pg.354]

As we have seen, part of Hartmann s laboratory instruction focused on recipes found in Oswald Croll s Royal Chemistry. It was, in fact, partly through Hartmann s notes to a later edition of the text that Croll s work became familiar to chemists thereafter. At... [Pg.111]

At the beginning of the seventeenth century Joseph Duchesne and Oswald Croll adopted the view that medical spirits and spirits extracted by chemists had the same source, namely, the spirit of the world. On this basis they stated that the only active remedies were those prepared by using spirits extracted by distillation. ... [Pg.53]
