The anhydrous halides, chromium (ITT) fluoride [7788-97-8], CrF, chromium (ITT) chloride [10025-73-7], CrCl, chromium (ITT) bromide [10031-25-1], CrBr, and chromium (ITT) iodide [13569-75-0], Crl, can be made by the reaction of Cr metal and the corresponding halogen at elevated temperatures (12,36). Other methods of synthesis for the haUdes are also possible (36—38). All of the haUdes have a layer stmcture and contain Cr(III) in an octahedral geometry. They are only slightly soluble in water but dissolve slowly when Cr(II) or a reducing agent such as Zn or Mg is added. 

An unusual crystal arrangement is exhibited by the isomorphous compounds CrCl and Crl. The close-packed cubic array of Cl or I atoms has two-thirds of the octahedral holes between every other pair of chlorine or iodine planes filled with chromium atoms. Alternate layers of the halogen compounds are held together by van der Waals forces (39,40).

In the H2 molecule, there are two Is electrons. They fill the crls orbital giving a single bond. In the He2 molecule, there would be four electrons, two from each atom. These would fill the bonding and antibonding orbitals. As a result, the number of bonds (the bond order) in He2 is zero. The general relation is...

Complexation with polyaromatic systems has also been observed. For instance, Mlnaphthalenelj, M = Cr (88,183), Mo (183), V (183), or Ti (183) may be synthesized in a solution reactor with the appropriate, metal vapors at liquid-nitrogen temperature. The Cr/naphthalene complex is less stable (dec. 160°C) than CrtCsH ) (m.p. 283-284° C). In fact, the naphthalene ligand is sufficiently labile to allow reaction under mild conditions, to afford CrL (L = CO or Bu NC), or Cr(naphth)Ls [L = PFj, P(OMe)3, or PMea]. The Mo, V, and Ti species are equally reactive. Analogous 1-methylnaphthalene complexes were also isolated (183). In addition, the complexes shown in Fig. 38 were synthesized by reaction, at the temperature of liquid nitrogen, of Cr atoms with 1,4-diphenylbutane (35, 201, 202). Analogous complexes were formed with 1,5-diphenylbutane (202). 

The principal methods for the hydrolase-promoted synthesis of enantiomerically pure alcohols are depicted in Figure 6.44. Biocatalytic acylation and alcoholysis have been reviewed recently [116,117]. Lipases, esterases, and proteases catalyze these reactions, but CAL-B [118-120], CRL [121,122], and diverse lipase preparations from Pseudomonas species are common place.
