Brittle fractme refers to the situation of the tensile stress, %, of a polymer jet exceeding some critical tensile strength, X. This type of fracture is possible in viscoelastic materials because these materials store some of the deformational energy, whereas purely viscous materials dissipate all the deformational energy. Figure 9.10 shows a schematic of a... [Pg.290]

It is, however, possible to calculate the tensile strength of a liquid by extrapolation of an equation of state for the fluid into the metastable region of negative pressure. Burgess and Everett in their comprehensive test of the tensile strength hypothesis, plot the theoretical curves of T /T against zjp, calculated from the equations of state of van der Waals, Guggenheim, and Berthelot (Fig. 3.24) (7], and are the critical temperature and critical... [Pg.158]

Polyphase Alloys. The two-phase alloys have a rather wide range of properties resulting from variations within the stmcture. If the second phase is distributed in critical depression, the hardness and strength are at a maximum and the ductility is at a moderate level. Tensile strength may be 415—825 MPa (60,000—120,000 psi) yield strength, 170—585 MPa (25,000—85,000 psi) and elongation, 10—40%. [Pg.238]

FIG. 20-70 The influence of moisture as a percentage of sample saturation S on granule deformabihty. Here, deformation strain (AL/L) is measured as a function of applied stress, with the peak stress and strain denoted by tensile strength and critical strain (AL/L) of the material.
