FIG. 20-70 The influence of moisture as a percentage of sample saturation S on granule deformabihty. Here, deformation strain (AL/L) is measured as a function of applied stress, with the peak stress and strain denoted by tensile strength and critical strain (AL/L) of the material. Most binders are solutions, such as linseed oil, which is composed of a number of fat and fatty acid molecules. Egg yolk is composed of water, fat molecules, lecithin, protein, dextrose, cholesterol, lutein, and other trace substances. These compositions of binding solutions allow more opportunities for uniform pigment adhesion and permanent paint qualities. [Pg.117]

The Armstrong model (1 7) can describe the retention of apolar, polar and even ionic solutes, provided they were binding solutes. The highest IL-, values corresponded to electrostatic interactions (1600 for CTAB with SDS micelles and 2600 for benzoic acid with CTAB with SDS micelles and 2600 for benzoic acid with CTAB micelles) or to comicellization (190 for SOBS with SDS micelles and 3000 for CPC with CTAB micelles). [Pg.136]

Methanol decreases the IC-, values of all the binding solutes because it increases the hydrophobic interactions. The effect of NaCl is very different the influence on the values of... [Pg.136]

Alumina may also be used as a sorbent in normal-phase SPE. It may be acidic, neutral, or basic depending on the pH of the wash solution used on the alumina. It too may bind solutes by hydrogen bonding, weak ion exchange, and other polar reactions. The type of alumina generally used will depend on the analytes, with basic solutes sorbed to acidic alumina and acidic analytes sorbed to basic alumina. The magnesium silicate, Florisil, may also be used in a similar fashion to silica. [Pg.107]
