Critical Path Method problems

In the scientific method problems are neatly stated, postulates made, data collected, and solutions obtained. Seldom is this path unidirectional. More often, it is a matter of luck and the right combination of individuals at the right time that leads to a solution. Science could not progress without the critical eyes of others. Different solutions to this problem have been proposed. In [7], Fisher described a series of transformations used in trace scheduling for microcode compaction. This method compacts the critical path independently of the control block boundaries. A refinement of this tqjproach was proposed recently by Potasman et al and is called percolation scheduling [8]. Camposano and Ber unaschi use an alternative approach called path-based scheduling [9], wh e all possible paths are compacted independently. A post-processing step merges separate paths to Iowa the controller costs. 

Figure 4.4 gives an example of an OAET for events that might follow release of gas from a furnace. In this example a gas leak is the initiating event and an explosion is the final hazard. Each task in the sequence is represented by a node in the tree structure. The possible outcomes of the task are depicted as "success" or "failure" paths leading out of the node. This method of task representation does not consider how alternative actions (errors of commission) could give rise to other critical situations. To overcome such problems, separate OAETs must be constructed to model each particular error of commission.
