The mechanism of scale formation also determines whether a crack in the film surface layer can mend. Recently, NASA tested a poly(hydridoallylcarbosilane) (SMP-10, developed by Starfire Systems, Inc.) as repair kit for mending minor damage or small cracks in the thermal shields of the spacecraft during the flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2005. When a spacecraft returns to Earth s atmosphere, the material converts at temperatures of more than 1500 °C into an extremely robust ceramic material.
