Cracking attributed to corrosion of reinforcement

This type of cracking is caused by the corrosion of the steel and it appears more than 2 years after construction. [Pg.602]

Corrosion of the reinforcing steel occurs if the alkalinity of the concrete is reduced through carbonation or if the passivity of the steel is destroyed by aggressive ions (usually chlorides) (ACI 2007). [Pg.602]

Corrosion cracks are formed in the longitudinal direction parallel to the reinforcing bars. To avoid corrosion cracking, use concrete of low permeability and adequate cover (ACI 2007 Neville 2011). [Pg.602]
