Lewis Structure Covalent Compound with Single Bonds... [Pg.253]

Lewis Structure for a Covalent Compound with Single Bonds Ammonia is a raw material used in the manufacture of many materials, including fertilizers, cleaning products, and explosives. Draw the Lewis structure for ammonia (NH3). [Pg.255]

An important achievement of the chemistry of covalent compounds is the development of complex compounds and variable composition phases. The rules governing the formation of these materials apply not only to covalent compounds but also to compounds with mixed bonding and with a strongly ionic interaction between their constituent atoms. These substances can be joined into a single group known as the valence compounds. [Pg.57]

The bicyclic compound 8.17 also serves as a source of the five-membered ring 8.20 upon reduction with SbPhs. In contrast to the related S or Se systems, 8.11a and 8.11b, both Cl substituents are attached covalently to Te in 8.20. Reaction of 8.20 with an excess of AsFs in SO2 produces the eight-membered cyclic [Tc2S2N4] dication, which exhibits a Te-Te bond length of 2.88 A (cf. 2.70 A for a Te-Te single bond) and no transannular S S bonding J... [Pg.155]

Although the S—O bond lengths in sulphoxides and sulphones seem to indicate that these are covalent double bonds, the dipole moments of these compounds obtained by calculation or by experimental measurements support the semipolar single-bond character in these compounds, and they should be represented as S - O, with about 66% ionic character14,15. [Pg.543]

Carbon likes to form bonds so well with itself that it can form multiple bonds to satisfy its valence of four. When two carbon atoms are linked with a single bond and their other valencies (three each) are satisfied by hydrogens, the compound is ethane. When two carbons are linked by a double bond (two covalent bonds) and their other valencies (two each) are satisfied by hydrogens, the compound is ethylene. When two carbons are linked by a triple bond (three covalent bonds) and their other valencies (one each) are satisfied by hydrogens, the compound is acetylene. [Pg.40]

In a search for CVD precursors for beryllium, the air sensitive, volatile solid CpBe(SiMe3) 17 was prepared from the reaction of Li[SiMe3] with CpBeCl in pentane.62 Characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, and mass spectra, the compound displays a Be-Si bond length of 2.185(2) A that is somewhat longer than the sum of covalent radii (2.01 A). The lengthening is similar to that observed in the related Be(Si(/-Bu)3)2 (Be-Si = 2.193(1) A),63 so there is not a pronounced effect from the Cp ligand on the Be-Si interaction. [Pg.75]

The number of molecules with single electron orbitals, and therefore suitable for ESR, is limited due to the electron-sharing feature of the usual covalent bond. This tends to restrict its use to compounds containing transition metals and reactions involving free radicals. However, this does make ESR very useful for monitoring reactions involving metallo-enzymes or free radicals. [Pg.86]
