Sector Costs on the Basis of the Input-Output Model The Battelle-NBS study used the lO model to estimate the cost of corrosion to sectors. In addition to the 10 model, the report focused on four areas federal government, personally owned automobiles, the electric power industry and loss of energy and materials. 

The Automobile Sector The total corrosion cost of automobiles was determined to range from 6 billion to 14 billion. The avoidable cost was estimated between 2 billion and 8 billion. 

Certain sectors of industry are seeking to use lightweight and corrosion-resistant compact heat exchangers for condensation as well as for convection duties. This requirement is of particular interest in the aviation, automobile and domestic heating and ventilation industries. Also, recent interest in the concept of mobile chemical plants necessitates the use of lightweight compact heat exchangers. Such plants may well have an important role to play in the future of processing as they provide flexibility, improved inherent safety... 

The built-in costs of corrosion of automobiles were identified as corrosion protection for steel body panels such as metallic zinc coatings, paint, adhesives and sealants, nonferrous metals, corrosion-resistant materials, rust-proofing heat exchanger components, mufflers, and tail pipe corrosion. The greatest impact on the cost of corrosion for automobiles was the adverse effect of corrosion on the cost of replacement of the automobile. Both the lO model and focused sector study showed that in both models the cost of replacement of the automobiles dominated the total cost and avoidable cost estimation. 

The corrosion cost analysis of four sectors, namely (i) federal government (ii) personally owned automobiles (iii) electric power industry and (iv) energy and material loses was done.
