Corrosion and Wear-related Failures

The various forms of corrosion, along with the characteristic features, are described in detail in Chapter 6. In the present context it will suffice to identify the particular type of corrosion failure by visual methods, metallography and analysis of the corrosion products. 

Some obvious features of different forms of corrosion are  

Pitting corrosion Intergranular corrosion Stress-corrosion cracking Selectively leaching Erosion-corrosion 

Localized attack in an area shielded from the environment Pits on the sample surface Nondestructive testing is recommended. 

Require detection by high magnification microscopy after using suitable sample preparation technique Locally elongated pits where there is rapid flow of a liquid in a pipe
