Corresponding-states in the

There still remains for consideration the question whether the theorem of corresponding states, which we have seen is at least approximately true, is in fact rigorously exact, or is only a more or less close approximation. This problem is, thanks to the now classical investigations of S. Young and his students, quite satisfactorily solved. Very careful measurements have shown that there are small deviations, the magnitude of which is much greater than the experimental errors, and the theorem of corresponding states, in the form previously employed ... [Pg.238]

The SRK and PR equations follow the principle of corresponding states in the three-parameter form only the commonly available critical properties T, p, and are required to apply the equation to a substance. The simple vdW mixing rules work well with these equations. Hence they are widely used for the calculation of vapor-liquid equilibrium in mixtures. [Pg.299]

The acidity of the PW12O40 is such that it can stabilize the adsorption of an alkene. Janik et alJ l have shown that the barriers for the protonation of ethylene, propene, 2-butene and isobutene are 69, 50.5, 51 and 14 kJ/mol, respectively. The results indicate that the formation of the carbenium ion from the n adsorbed state is favored on the Keggin structure over the similar corresponding state in the chabazite (see Chapter 4). For example, the barrier for the protonation of propene in chabazite was calculated to be -1-56 kJ/mol in comparison with the value of 50.5 kJ/mol calculated on the phosphotungstic (HPW) Keggin structure. The barriers, however, for the reaction of a surface alkoxy to the carbenium ion state are all higher on phosphotungstic acid than on chabazite. [Pg.238]

This explains the success of the well-known rule of corresponding states in the macro world deviations from ideal gas behavior depend on two parameters that characterize the particular system, but otherwise have a universal shape. For example, Eq. (2.21) for the second virial coefficient can be expressed in reduced units as... [Pg.47]

The two-dimensional carrier confinement in the wells formed by the conduction and valence band discontinuities changes many basic semiconductor parameters. The parameter important in the laser is the density of states in the conduction and valence bands. The density of states is gready reduced in quantum well lasers (11,12). This makes it easier to achieve population inversion and thus results in a corresponding reduction in the threshold carrier density. Indeed, quantum well lasers are characterized by threshold current densities as low as 100-150 A/cm, dramatically lower than for conventional lasers. In the quantum well lasers, carriers are confined to the wells which occupy only a small fraction of the active layer volume. The internal loss owing to absorption induced by the high carrier density is very low, as Httie as 2 cm . The output efficiency of such lasers shows almost no dependence on the cavity length, a feature usehil in the preparation of high power lasers. [Pg.130]

Cost is a significant factor in the consumer s acceptance of substitute dairy foods. Table 20 shows the relative cost of substitute fat and protein in the various substitute foods. A comparison of retail prices of selected dairy products and corresponding substitutes in four supermarkets in the midwestem United States in the Fall of 1992 are shown in Table 21. In all cases the prices for the substitutes are lower than the prices of the respective dairy product. The smallest price margin is in the area where the substitute products are advertised as fat-reduced or cholesterol-free. [Pg.450]

Heterocyclic enamines A -pyrroline and A -piperideine are the precursors of compounds containing the pyrrolidine or piperidine rings in the molecule. Such compounds and their N-methylated analogs are believed to originate from arginine and lysine (291) by metabolic conversion. Under cellular conditions the proper reaction with an active methylene compound proceeds via an aldehyde ammonia, which is in equilibrium with other possible tautomeric forms. It is necessary to admit the involvement of the corresponding a-ketoacid (12,292) instead of an enamine. The a-ketoacid constitutes an intermediate state in the degradation of an amino acid to an aldehyde. a-Ketoacids or suitably substituted aromatic compounds may function as components in active methylene reactions (Scheme 17). [Pg.295]

We have already noted that Polya s Theorem can be stated in the context of mappings from one set to another. Let D and R be two sets, and G a group of permutations of the elements of D, and consider the set of all mappings f D - R. If D is a set of boxes and R the set of figures, then each such mapping corresponds to a configuration. [Pg.109]
