The best-known equation of the type mentioned is, of course, Hammett s equation. It correlates, with considerable precision, rate and equilibrium constants for a large number of reactions occurring in the side chains of m- and p-substituted aromatic compounds, but fails badly for electrophilic substitution into the aromatic ring (except at wi-positions) and for certain reactions in side chains in which there is considerable mesomeric interaction between the side chain and the ring during the course of reaction. This failure arises because Hammett s original model reaction (the ionization of substituted benzoic acids) does not take account of the direct resonance interactions between a substituent and the site of reaction. This sort of interaction in the electrophilic substitutions of anisole is depicted in the following resonance structures, which show the transition state to be stabilized by direct resonance with the substituent ... [Pg.137]

Thus we see that there is reasonable correlation between power of an expl, measured in a variety of ways, and its heat of detonation. Earlier in this article it was mentioned that power can also be correlated with rv=Tj The latter correlation follows directly from Eq (1) if cvf f(T). With this restriction, the two middle integrals of Eq (1) give... [Pg.843]

Furthermore, the rate of the bromide transfer to the cation from SbBrnCl n grew with increasing n. Both graduations mentioned above could be correlated with the decrease of the reaction energy AE for the reactions... [Pg.211]

Iridium, the heaviest element of the cobalt group, was found to display the least tendency towards cluster formation at 10-12 K (49), which, as already mentioned, was quite facile for Co and Rh (49). Considering the plethora of sharp, well-defined, atomic-resonance lines observed for Ir (see Fig. 6) compared to those of Co and Rh, the remarkably impressive correlation with the representation of the gas-... [Pg.88]

In reality, several factors were mentioned as being responsible for this behavior, such as variations in bond angle distortion, in the internal stress or in the hydrogen content [40, 76], but all of them are also strongly correlated with the variation of optical gap width in amorphous carbon films. Theoretical work on Raman spectroscopy on DLC materials gave additional support for Dillon s interpretation [77]. [Pg.247]

A third approach would be to measure some indicator of functional output of dopamine and/or serotonin neurons. As mentioned previously, studies in laboratory animals can be invaluable in defining parameters that change in correlation with directly measurable neurotoxic effects in the brain. [Pg.349]

Mendelsohn et al. 1984 Murray and Leid 1984). Of particular interest are several stereoisomer pairs of "sigma opiates," one isomer of which produces PCP-like behavioral effects and displaces bound 3H-PCP more potently than the other. These agents should be especially well suited for a test of the hypothesis mentioned in the preceding section, namely, that induction of the PCP-like be-havioral deficit can be correlated with block of Sv. [Pg.57]

The thickness of the ordered crystalline regions, termed crystallite or lamellar thickness (Lc), is an important parameter for correlations with thermodynamic and physical properties. Lc and the distribution of lamellar thicknesses can be determined by different experimental methods, including thin-section TEM mentioned earlier, atomic force microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering and analysis of the LAM in Raman spectroscopy. [Pg.284]

Using our dataset which includes all of the descriptors mentioned so far, we conducted a PLS analysis using SIMCA software [34], In the initial PLS model, MW, V, and a (Alpha) were removed because they are in each case highly correlated with CMR (r > 0.95). SIMCA s VIP function selected only qmin (Qnegmin) for removal on the basis of it making no important contribution to the model. In the second model, 2q+/a (SQpos A) and ECa/a (SCa A) coincided nearly exactly in the three-component space of these two, we decided to keep only ECa/a in the third and final model. This model consisted of three components and accounted for 75% of the variance in log SQ the Q2 value was 0.66. [Pg.238]

Some investigators described artifactual DNA sequence alterations after formalin fixation, when testing DNA samples extracted from FFPE tissues. Williams et al.46 reported that up to one mutation artifact per 500 bases was found in FFPE tissue. They also found that the chance of artificial mutations in FFPE tissue sample was inversely correlated with the number of cells used for DNA extraction that is, the fewer cells, the more the artifacts. However, they mentioned that these artifacts can be distinguished from true mutations by confirmational sequencing of independent amplification products, in essence comparing the product of different batches. Quach et al.47 documented that damaged bases can be found in DNA extracted from FFPE tissues, but are still readable after in vitro translesion synthesis by Taq DNA polymerase. They pointed out that appropriate caution should be exercised when analyzing small numbers of templates or cloned PCR products derived from FFPE tissue samples. [Pg.55]
