Cordia alliodora

The structures of six new geranyl-hydroquinone-derived compounds, from Cordia alliodora, provide additional support for proposed biogenesis in Cordia species (see Vol. 4, p. 69). A series of hydroquinone terpenoids in Cordia alliodora (Boraginaceae) are derived from a geranylphenol precursor (Fig. 19.14). The presence of a number of compounds derived from this pathway in this species suggests that a simple reaction of the phenolic nucleus is followed by cyclization, rearrangement, and subsequent oxidation (Manners and Jurd, 1977).

Jacquinonic acid (75) from Jacquinia pungens (Theophrastaceae) inhibits feeding by the leafcutter ant Atta cephalotes. As this compound is nonvolatile, tactile contact by the ant is probably necessary for sensing the presence of this triterpene. A mixture of triterpenoids from Cordia alliodora (Boraginaceae) similarly prevents feeding by tiiis ant (Harbome, 1987).
