The controversy over genetic testing is closely tied to costs (who will pay ) and related privacy issues (if the insurance company pays, will they have access ). As drug products become increasingly customized to genetic makeup, these issues will have to be resolved. Pharmacists in a consultative role improved management of lipid disorders in an ambulatory internal medicine clinic.In this study, the pharmacist met with patients prior to their physician appointment. Medication histories were taken, compliance encouraged, drug costs were tracked, and the least costly recommendation made to the physician. The pharmacist reviewed laboratory data and recommendations with the physician and attached a copy of these to the front of the chart. Decisions to accept or decline the recommendations were made by the physician. The majority of recommendations were accepted. When compared with usual care where pharmacists were not involved, significantly more patients reached LDL goals. 

Chemical societies. Drug firms typically pay the costs of belonging to a scientific association. Examples are the American Chemical Society, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Membership reduces the expense of individual subscriptions to the chemical journals that these societies publish. Society members read these journals to learn technological developments and rival firms doings. Partly as a result, pharmaceutical companies bear the costs of their employees personal copies.
