Copper double displacement reaction

Copper(n) sulfate, CUSO4, reacts with sodium hydroxide, NaOH, in a double displacement reaction. A precipitate of copper(n) hydroxide, Cu(OH)2, and aqueous sodium sulfate, Na2S04, is produced. 

This experiment allows you to carry out the sequential conversion of copper metal to copper(II) nitrate to copper(II) hydroxide to copper(II) oxide to copper(II) sulfate and back to copper metal. This conversion is carried out using synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, and double displacement reactions. 

When an alkenyl copper species is used in the displacement reaction, then the alkenyl species reacts with retention of configuration of the double bond (1.172). Alkenyl radicals can interconvert readily and these results suggest, therefore, that alkenyl radicals are not involved in these reactions. 

Copper(ll) chloride and lead(II) nitrate react in aqueous solutions by double displacement. The so-called copper trialkylmethylborates , formed by addition of Cu salts to lithium trialkylmethylborates, transfer an alkyl group from boron to carbon with direct displacement of halide in their reactions with allyl, propargyl, acyl, or 2-ethoxycarbonylvinyl halides. In the last case the stereochemistry about the double bond is retained. 

The same group also showed that tris(dithiocarbamate) complexes react with a range of copper(I) salts in acetonitrile giving 1 1, 2 1 and 3 1 heterobimetallic adducts together with polymeric species (Fig. 175), the latter being linked and cross-linked into a novel double-stranded polymer by centrosymmetric displaced step Culfi units (498,1400,1401). In contrast, reaction with [Cu(BF4)2] simply yields [Co2(S2CNR2)s][BF4] and [Cu(S2CNR2)2][BF4] (1118).
