In plural breeders, the effects of females on each other are mutual, but in singular cooperative breeding species, such as beavers, prairie voles or the conunon marmoset, the dominant female suppresses reproduction by the subordinate females. The parallels between social organization in these species and social insects are explored in Section 4.5. It is worth noting that some of these social effects, such as influences on puberty timing, are also seen in solitary rodent species under some conditions.
