Cooling water systems pollution problems

Cooling water system corrosion causes immediate and delayed problems. Difficulties spread from a failure like ripples from a pebble thrown into a pool. A single failure may force an unscheduled outage, redirect worker efforts, contaminate product, compromise safety, increase equipment expense, violate pollution regulations, and decrease productivity. [Pg.462]

In Chapter 14 the use of additives to combat potential fouling was discussed. In the use of chemical treatment for cooling water there has to be an emphasis on effective and rapid dispersion since the concentration of the additives employed must be low, i.e. a few mg/l where possible, to minimise cost and to reduce potential pollution problems. In general the additive formulation will be based on the need to limit corrosion (i.e. the use of corrosion inhibitors), scale formation (i.e. the use of crystal modifiers, dispersants or threshold chemicals or a combination) and biofouling (i.e. the use of biocides and dispersants). In many installations additives are injected on the suction side of the main pump so that turbulence within the pump will provide rapid mixing. In very large cooling systems multiple injection nozzles will be required to enhance distribution. [Pg.417]

This behavior can lead to an environmental problem known as thermal pollution. During many industrial processes, large amounts of water are taken from a nearby river or lake, pumped through the system to cool liquids, gases, and equipment, and then returned to the body of water at a higher temperature. The metabolic rates of fish and other aquatic animals increase in the warmer water released near the plant outlet thus, their need for O2 increases, but the concentration of dissolved O2 is lower at the higher temperature. Farther from the plant, the water temperature returns to ambient levels and the O2 solubility increases. One way to lessen the problem is with cooling towers, which lower the water s temperature before it exits the plant. [Pg.401]
