Cooling shape, melt spinning

Transmet Corporation manufactures flakes by a Rapid Solidification Technology. There are two variations of this method Melt spin and Spinning cup methods. In the Melt spin method, molten metal of any composition (pure metal or alloy) is driven through an orifice and the shape formed in the orifice (continuous sheet) is rapidly cooled on a chilling block. The key variables of the melt spinning process are (1) take-up velocity, (2) length of the spinline, (3) cooling conditions along the spinline, (4) extmsion temperature, (5) mass throughput per spinneret orifice, and (6) the size and shape of the spinneret holes. These process variables interact... 

The shape memory mechanism of the SMF can be illustrated as follows during melt spinning, at a temperature which is higher than T (222°C in the given ejqieriment), the fiber is extruded from a spinneret. Upon cooling to an ambient temperature, which is below T, the fiber is wound up and the permanent fiber shape is cast. 

Post-die processing includes a niunber of operations carried out at the exit of the extruder die in a free-siuface way. Examples of such processes are fiber spinning, film blowing, and sheet forming. The shape and dimensions of the extrudate material are determined by the rheological properties of the melt, the die dimensions, the cooling conditions, and the take-up speed (relative to the extrusion rate).
