Converter plate

A convenient method of obtaining a strong neutron source with a well-defined spectrum is to expose a uranium converter plate to thermal neutrons from a reactor. The resultant fission of uranium nuclei leads to the release of fast neutrons with a spectrum of the form... 

It may be converted into dibromofluorescein diacetate as follows. Reflux a mixture of 10 g. of dibromofluorescein, 40 ml. of redistilled acetic anhydride and 1 drop of concentrated sulphuric acid for 1 hour, pour into water, filter, wash, and dry the resulting diacetate (95 per cent, yield) has m.p. 210°. Upon recrystallisation from acetic anhydride or nitrobenzene, the pure diacetate (colourless or pale yellow plates), m.p. 211°, is obtained. Hydrolysis with alcoholic sulphuric acid gives a quantitative yield of pure dibromofluorescein, m.p. 285°.

The screw consists of a feed section, a rapid transition section, and a metering section a rounded forward end prevents stagnation. The breaker plate that converts the rotary motion of the melt into smooth, straight flow should have as many holes as possible both ends of each hole should be countersunk for streamlined flow. 

The Series 1151 differential pressure transmitter manufactured by Rosemount (MinneapoHs, Minnesota) uses a capacitance sensor in which capacitor plates are located on both sides of a stretched metal-sensing diaphragm. This diaphragm is displaced by an amount proportional to the differential process pressure, and the differential capacitance between the sensing diaphragm and the capacitor plates is converted electronically to a 4—20 m A d-c output.

Insoluble Sulfur. In natural mbber compounds, insoluble sulfur is used for adhesion to brass-coated wire, a necessary component in steel-belted radial tires. The adhesion of mbber to the brass-plated steel cord during vulcanization improves with high sulfur levels ( 3.5%). Ordinary rhombic sulfur blooms at this dose level. Crystals of sulfur on the surface to be bonded destroy building tack and lead to premature failure of the tire. Rubber mixtures containing insoluble sulfur must be kept cool (<100°C) or the amorphous polymeric form converts to rhombic crystals.
