Continuous Production and Use of Diazomethane

The trovafloxacin development program therefore required bulk supplies of bromonitromethane, which can be produced by the bromination of nitromethane. However, there are a number of problems associated with this direct bromination route  

To address these problems, Phoenix has manufactured bromonitromethane using continuous processing technology in a plant that was engineered to fit the chemistry. The bromination was carried out in low-volume static mixer tubes, allowing efficient heat transfer and accurate process control. 

This conhnuous production process ensured safe operahon by minimizing the inventory of all reactants and intermediates. The entire produchon platform was of low footprint, approximately the size of a family-sized garage, and involved a capital investment of less than 100 K. This plant had the capacity to manufacture bromonitromethane at the rate of 200 ty . 

Diazomethane, CH2N2, is a toxic, highly reactive, potenlially explosive gas [18]. 

It is often used for the rapid and quanhtative methylahon of acidic OH groups
