Contents 2 Derived Variable Specifications

In an attempt to delineate the variability of serially cultured callus and cell suspension cultures derived from three cultivars of C. roseus obtained from highly uniform explants, Kurz et al. (596) screened several hundred cultures from anthers of buds at identical developmental stages. The total alkaloid content of the cell suspension cultures varied from 0 to 1.5% of dry weight. The relative amounts of alkaloids produced were found to be fairly constant for each culture and appeared to be cell line specific.
