Containment precautions used

Special Precautions. Use of sodium nitrite or other nitrosating agents in formulations containing nikanolamines could lead to formation of suspected cancer-causing nitrosamines. 

Containment buildings are sometimes used to moderate the impact of a spill of an especially toxic material. When containment is used, special precautions are included to ensure worker protection, such as remote controls, continuous monitoring, and restricted access. 

The Royal Society of Chemistry publishes "Laboratory Hazards Bulletin" (ref. 21) containing much useful information about safety which is abstracted from the literature. Several recent NMR studies have alloHed the identification of about tnenty silicate oligomers and quantitative or semi-quantitative estimates of their respective concentrations. In spite of the precautions used by some authors, the measured concentrations and in particular the experimental monomer concentration (used as a basis in our calculations) are probably not alaays very accurate expecial-ly in the case of the less alkaline or the more concentrated (in silica) solutions. The use of an inert silicon-containing internal standard could perhaps be useful. To this lack of accuracy is added the uncertainty of the pH measurement in such strongly alkaline solutions. 

Such an explosion may be avoided by taking a few simple precautions. Ethers should be bought in small quantities, kept in tightly sealed containers, and used promptly. Any procedure requiring evaporation or distillation should use only peroxide-free ether. Any ether that might be contaminated with peroxides should be discarded or treated to destroy the peroxides.

Any process heat plant design implies piping through the containment to connect the reactor vessel with the chemical plant. The fracture of a pipe could result in the accumulation of a flammable gas mixture in the containment. Precautions must be taken to minimize the risk of a fire or gas explosion such as avoidance of explosive gas ingress, proper detection devices, inerting, sufficient safety distances, appropriate layout of secondary coolant boundary, explosion-proofed wall, plant isolation valve. For the PNP-500, the use of two concentric pipes for the process gas carrying lines were recommended. Alternatives are concrete channels around the gas lines or inerting of the containment [10].
