Olefin synthesis starts usually from carbonyl compounds and carbanions with relatively electropositive, redox-active substituents mostly containing phosphorus, sulfur, or silicon. The carbanions add to the carbonyl group and the oxy anion attacks the oxidizable atom Y in-tramolecularly. The oxide Y—O" is then eliminated and a new C—C bond is formed. Such reactions take place because the formation of a Y—0 bond is thermodynamically favored and because Y is able to expand its coordination sphere and to raise its oxidation number.

Compounds containing phosphorus can be both valuable synthetic intermediates and target compounds of solid-phase synthesis. Important synthetic intermediates include phosphonium salts and phosphorus ylides, which are key intermediates in carbonyl olefinations. Their preparation is discussed in Section 5.2.2.1. The preparation of oligonucleotides, these being the most important phosphorus-containing target molecules in solid-phase synthesis, is considered in Section 16.2. In this chapter, the preparation of phosphines, phosphonic acid derivatives, and phosphinic acid derivatives is discussed.

Zeolites containing phosphorus in the tetrahedral site in the framework have been synthesized. Phosphorus incorporation in a variety of structural types of zeolite frameworks has been achieved analcime, phillipsite, chabazite, Type A zeolite, Type L zeolite, and Type B ( ) zeolite. The syntheses and properties of some of the new aluminosilicophos-phate zeolites are described. The synthesis technique involves gel crystallization where incorporation of phosphorus is accomplished by controlled copolymerization and coprecipitation of all the framework component oxides, aluminate, silicate, and phosphate, into a relatively homogeneous gel phase. Subsequent crystallization of the gel is carried out at temperatures in the region of 80° to 210°C. Proof and mechanism of framework substitution of phosphorus is based on electron microprobe analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and other characterization. 

Fluorophosphines are tervalent phosphorus compounds containing phosphorus-fluorine bonds and they often show markedly different chemical behavior compared with other halogenophosphines. The current industrial production of methylmethacrylate by the acetone-cyanohydrin process suffers from a number of drawbacks, which make it environmentally unfriendly. In particular, it makes use of a very toxic reactant (HCN) and intermediate (acetone cyanohydrin), and coproduces large amounts of impure ammonium sulphate, contaminated with organic compounds. Among the several alternative synthetic routes which have been proposed, particularly interesting from both the practical and scientific points of view is the single-step oxidation of isobutane to methacrylic acid, intermediate in the synthesis of methylmethacrylate. Several industrial companies have studied this reaction (and the selective oxidation of propane to acrylic acid, as well), and it has been established that the most active and selective catalysts are those which are based on Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POM s), containing phosphorus and molybdenum as the main components [1-18].
