The chronicles of the county contain numerous references to the name Bourne. As early as 1315, a John de la Bourne was chaplain to the Hospital of St. John the Baptist, Lichfield in 1548, John and William Bourne jointly held the lease of the prebend of Congreve in the collegiate church of Penkridge. In 1654, Richard Bourne was established in Cannock by the Church Commissioners to preach the gospel at a salary of 100 per annum.
