Ron Paul, a former U.S. congressman, contested the general elections in Austin, Texas, in which he was narrowly defeated by Democratic Party candidate Robert Gamage. Paul proved sizable fraud before the courts however, the judge mled that sufficient magnitude of fraud to turn the elections had not been shown and denied Paul s motion to be placed in Congress. [Pg.358]

In the Fourth Congress, the House set up a standing committee of ways and means, another of claims, and still another of commerce and manufactures. But when Representative Ezekiel Gilbert tried to have referred to this committee a resolution to restrict the carrying trade to American vessels (which would seem a pretty obvious and logical reference), his motion was defeated largely through the efforts of James Madison. And as late as 1806 a matter which had been referred to the Ways and Means Committee was recalled by the House and re-referred to the Committee of the Whole. [Pg.108]

Anaphase motion in some forms may pose problems akin to prometaphase congression in that coordinated behavior of partner chromosomes may be manifest. Forer s (1966) ultraviolet microbeam studies of crane fly spermatocytes showed that partner half-bivalents (the two half-bivalents conjoined until anaphase) always behaved alike following the irradiation of one partner s chromosomal fibers. Thus both continued, slowed, or stopped motion. In the latter case, if motion began anew, both partners started at the same time. More directly comparable with congression, although clearly atypical, are the late anaphase motion of sex chromosomes in crane flies (reviewed by Dietz, 1969) and in the hugProtenor (Schrader, 1935) (see also p. 276). [Pg.245]

Prometaphase congression is caused chiefly by poleward forces, but lengthening of chromosomal fibers may play some role in most cells. In a restricted class of spindles, motion of individual chromosome spindle units relative to others may produce congression.) This would account for the motion itself, but why it leads to a position midway between the poles is not understood. [Pg.246]

This model proposes a functional differentiation of chromosomal and interpolar spindle fibers in good accord with the cytological features of prometaphase congression and separate poleward motion and spindle elongation in anaphase, with the static mechanical properties, and with the slight evidence for differences in chromosomal and interpolar fibers from their differing responses to colchicine and chloral hydrate (p. 245). Any more extended discussion is unwarranted until the motions of granules and displaced chromosomes have been fully described in a variety of forms specific predictions are readily formulated. [Pg.255]
