Chiral amino acids The stereochemistry of alkylation (quasi-equatorial) at C3 of the anion of 1 results from the conformation of the seven-membered ring in a boat form. The products can be hydrolyzed to (S)-amino acids (3).

Amurensins I-M (737-741) were isolated from the roots of Vitis amurensis (Rupr.). Some of them had an ampelopsin A or balanocarpol unit, in which the conformations of the seven-membered carbon ring were identified for the first time. The authors claimed that (+)-vitisin A (698) and 7-2-viniferin (747) [330] should have the same structure with a pseudo-boat conformation of the seven-membered ring and y-2-viniferin (747) was erroneously elucidated [329]. 

Full details have appeared on the formation of the novel 4(5 6)u6eo-steroid system (374) which is produced in about 90% yield by prolonged treatment of 6) -bromo-4, 5 -epoxycholestan-3)S-ol with lithium aluminium hydride. The structure has been confirmed by independent synthesis " of the derivative (375) and the rearrangement has been shown ° to be, in essence, a 1,3-elimination of the initial lithium aluminium hydride reduction product (373), which can be isolated after brief treatment of the bromo-epoxide with hydride. On the basis of the spectral data, the preferred conformations of the seven-membered ring have been deduced. ... 

Alkoxy-radicals in ring b, generated from hydroxy-derivatives of B-homo-cholestanes with Pb(OAc)4, attack suitably placed C—H bonds to form trans-annular ether bridges. The main reactions are illustrated in Scheme 16. The 7a/ -alcohol gave only a little of the 7a, 19-oxide, the main product being an unsaturated aldehyde of uncertain structure. All the reactions in Scheme 16 occur through favourable conformations of the seven-membered ring. ... 

Chromatographic values suggest the presence of a boat-shaped conformation of the seven-membered ring in azulenophosphepin 155b (76ZNB1116). 

The lactarane sesquiterpenes 10.2, 10.10, 10.13, containing the 2(9),7(8)-cycloheptadiene ring were submitted to conformational analysis by molecular mechanics and HNMR spectroscopy (9). It was observed that the conformational mobility of each compound is practically restricted to the interconversion of the envelope forms of the cyclopentene ring by contrast, essentially only a single conformation of the seven membered ring, with the 3-methyl group pseudo-equatorially oriented, is populated. This is due to the planarity of either the diene in 10.13 or the diene-carbonyl double bonds in 10.2, 10.10.

Computations were performed for the N-fluoroquinuclidinium ion 17 formation of such species is known to facilitate fluorine transfer significantly. It is noted that the conformations of the seven-membered ring transition states TS7 and TS8 (Figure 3.10) are different and comparable to the known conformations of cycloheptane in the TS7 the ring adopts a chair conformation, whereas in TS8 the boat conformation is taken to expose the opposite enantioface. 

Grindley and Szarek have deduced the conformations of the seven-membered ring in 2,5-G-methylene- and l,3 2,5-di-0-methylene-D-mannitoland 1,6-di-0-benzyl-2,5-0-methylene-D- raZ)/ o-hex-3-ulose in solution from the geminal and vicinal proton coupling constants.
