Confining pressure

It is rare to be able to observe elastic deformations (which occur for instance during earthquakes) since by definition an elastic deformation does not leave any record. However, many subsurface or surface features are related to the other two modes of deformation. The composition of the material, confining pressure, rate of deformation and temperature determine which type of deformation will be initiated. [Pg.81]

Deformation Under Loa.d. The mechanical behavior of coal is strongly affected by the presence of cracks, as shown by the lack of proportionahty between stress and strain in compression tests or between strength and rank. As mentioned in Section 9.4, Griggs and Blade (1964) observed a dramatic weakening of these crystals when deformed at 1.5 GPa confining pressure in the presence of water at Ts 800 C. However, Mackwell and Paterson (1985) were unable to reproduce this result at a confining pressure of 300 MPa. They interpreted the absence of weakening as due to a decrease in the diffusion coefficient of the water-related defects involved in the Griggs (1974) mechanism, which was reviewed briefly in Section 9.4. [Pg.312]
