Conducting lubricants

This technology does not avoid bearing currents, but rather provides a low-impedance bypass. Conductive lubricants still lack the quality of traditional lubricants.

In many cases, it is necessary to apply "intimate" electrodes to the surfaces of the specimen. These are usually of thin (6-25 pm) aluminum foil in conjunction with a conductive lubricant. Other intimate electrodes may be used, e.g., vacuum deposited aluminum or conductive paint. Detailed advice will be found in BS2782 [4].

This is an analysis frequently conducted on oil lubricants. Generally, the additive is known and its concentration can be followed by direct comparison of the oil with additive and the base stock. For example, concentrations of a few ppm of dithiophosphates or phenols are obtained with an interferometer. However, additive oils today contain a large number of products their identification or their analysis by IR spectrometry most often requires preliminary separation, either by dialysis or by liquid phase chromatography.

In the 1990s, carbon microbeads have been produced by a proprietary process using phenoHc resin. Potential appHcations are lubricants, adhesives, and conductive fillers for plastics, mbbers, and coatings (97). 

Elastomeric Fibers. Elastomeric fibers are polyurethanes combiaed with other nonelastic fibers to produce fabrics with controlled elasticity (see Fibers, elastomeric). Processing chemicals must be carefully selected to protect all fibers present ia the blend. Prior to scouriag, the fabrics are normally steamed to relax uneven tensions placed on the fibers duriag weaving. Scouriag, which is used to remove lubricants and siting, is normally conducted with aqueous solutions of synthetic detergents and tetrasodium pyrophosphate, with aqueous emulsions of perchloroethylene or with mineral spidts and sodium pyrophosphate. 

As a part of the lubrication program, oil should be periodically tested. The testing requires drawing oil from the system for a laboratory analysis. The usual tests conducted to determine the condition of oils include viscosity, pH and neutralization number, precipitation, color and odor, and a check for foreign particles in the oil. The results should be reviewed and compared with new oil characteristics to determine the life characteristics of the oil.
