My first research as a graduate student was under the direction of Edward Condon. From him 1 learned that a theoretician should have a broad background. 

In 1928, tbe Russian physicist, George Gamow, and two American physicists, Edward Condon and Ronald Guerney proposed separately that alpha particles, identical to the nuclei of helium atoms, were present inside heavy, unstable nuclei because a strong force kept them within the nucleus. According to the laws of probability, occasionally one of them reaches the edge of the atom, and flies away. Gregory Breit (1899-1981) was an American physicist and professor at the New York, Wisconsin, Yaie, Buf-faio universities. Breit and Eugene Wigner introduced the resonance states of parti-cies, and, with Edward Condon, created the proton-proton scattering theory. Breit measured aiso the height of the ionosphere. 

Edward Condon (1902-1974), American physicist and one of the pioneers of quantum theory in the United States. In 1928, Condon and Gurney discovered the tunneling. More widely known is his second great achievement-the Franck-Condon rule (discussed later in this chapter). During the WW2 he participated in the Manhattan project.
