Higher order compounds inevitably present a more complicated picture than binary compounds. It is possible, however, to introduce a certain amount of classification, as indicated below. [Pg.102]

Combination of the hydroxyl ion with the mesomeric cation involves the removal of a double bond. For the quaternary pyridinium compounds this causes the total loss of the aromaticity. For quaternary quinolinium and isoquinolinium compounds, the aromatic character of one of the two rings is lost, and for the quaternary acridinium compounds that of one out of three. Hence., the order of stabilities of these compounds (determined by Hantzsch ) is explained. - Comparison of quaternary 3,4-dihydroisoquinolinium compounds and their isoquinolinium analogs with respect to the equilibrium (5) (4) shows that a much higher hydroxyl ion concentration is necessary for the isoquinolinium ions to form the carbinolamine. To investigate this dendritic effect, a dimeric model compound was synthesized which mimics the tethered relationship of two catalytic units within one branch of the PAMAM dendrimer. All dendritic catalysts were more active in the HKR than the parent complex. Furthermore, the dendritic catalysts also displayed significantly higher activity than the dimeric model compound. The authors proposed that this positive dendritic effect arises from restricted conformation imposed by the dendrimer structure, thereby creating a bigger effective molarity of [Co(salen)] units. Alternatively, the multimeric nature of the dendrimer, may lead to higher order in productive cooperative interactions between the catalytic units. [Pg.91]

In the adsorption with Tenax alone satisfactory results were obtained, while in the presence of mineral oil a considerable proportion of the organophos-phorus pesticides (particularly Malathion and Parathion-methyl) was not adsorbed and was recovered in the filtered water. This drawback can be overcome by adding a layer of Celite 545 which, in order to prevent blocking of the column, is mixed with silanised glass wool plugs. A number of analyses of surface and estuarine sea waters were carried out by this modified Tenax column and simultaneously by the liquid-liquid extraction technique. To some of the samples taken, standard mixtures of pesticides were also added, each at the level of 1 xg/l (i.e., in concentration from 13 to 500 times higher than that usually found in the waters analysed). One recovery trial also specifically concerned polychlorobiphenyls. The results obtained in these tests show that the two extraction methods, when applied to surface waters that were not filtered before extraction, yielded very similar results for many insecticides, with the exception of compounds of the DDT series, for which discordant results were frequently obtained. [Pg.422]
