Many agents have been proposed and patented including copper sulfate (34), zinc chloride (35), ferric chloride (36), aluminum chloride (36), and phosphoms pentoxide (37) ferric chloride, zinc chloride, and phosphoms pentoxide have been most widely used. The addition of these agents may vary from 0.1 to 3%, depending upon the feedstock and the desired characteristics of the product (Table 5) and all asphalt feedstocks do not respond to catalysts in the same way. Differences in feedstock composition are important qualifiers in determining the properties of the asphalt product. The important softening point-penetration relationship, which describes the temperature susceptibiUty of an asphalt, also varies with the source of the feedstock. Straight-reduced, air-blown, and air-blown catalytic asphalts from the same cmde feedstock also vary considerably. [Pg.364]

The techniques of monomolecular rate theory easily transform measured reaction data into a form where we can analyze apparent kinetics and the effects of intracrystalline diffusion by the use of selectivity data. Time dependency has been eliminated. Since selectivity is extremely reproducible and is independent of short-term aging effects, the number of experimental runs is reduced while data reliability is maintained. For catalyst evaluation at any temperature, it is necessary to determine the equilibrium composition and the straight-line reaction path. With this information any catalyst can be evaluated at this temperature with simply the additional information from a curved-line reaction path. The approach used in the application of monomolecular rate theory to the xylene isomerization selectivity kinetics is as follows. Reference is made to the composition diagram, Figure 1. [Pg.540]

Rubbers are plasticized with petroleum oils, before vulcanization, to improve processability and adhesion of rubber layers to each other and to reduce the cost and increase the softness of the final product. Large quantities of these oil-extended rubbers are used in tire compounds and related products. The oil content is frequently about 50 wt% of the styrene-butadiene rubber. The chemical composition of the extender oil is important. Saturated hydrocarbons have limited compatibility with most rubbers and may sweat-out. Aromatic oils are more compatible and unsaturated straight chain and cyclic compounds are intermediate in solvent power. [Pg.462]

Fastener holes should be straight and round within the limits specified. Normal hole tolerance is 0.075 mm (0.003 in). Interference fits may cause delamination of the composite. Holes should be drilled perpendicular to the sheet within one degree. Special sleeved fasteners can limit the chances of damage in the clearance hole and still provide an interference fit. Fasteners can also be bonded in place with adhesives to reduce fretting. [Pg.425]
