The techniques developed are based on the determination of fibre length and molecular weight on the one hand, and of the thermo-oxidative stability of the matrix material and composite bending strength on the other. [Pg.178]

Like wood, wood-derived composites also have anisotropic properties. For instance, the bending strength of a certain SiC ceramic with a density of 2.5 g/cm3 varies from 2000 to 120 MPa, depending on the direction of the load in relation to the growth rings of the wood. [Pg.318]

Effect of the h-BN content on the bending strength of Si3N4/h-BN composites. [Pg.347]

Lamicq etal. (1986) reported that the bending strength of water-quenched woven SiC/SiC (CVI) specimens decreased slightly in the quench range A T = 300-750°C, and then remained unchanged up to A T= 1200°C. The composite also seemed to exhibit a steep R-curve behaviour. [Pg.421]

Three-point bending strength of reference sample and composites as function of apparent density. At each point the average value of five samples is shown. [Pg.523]

Carbon nanotube-ceramic composites (684) showing 37% increase in bending strength compared with other carbon-filled samples (629 carbon fiber, 644 carbon black, 645 graphite), from Ref. 19. [Pg.531]

Yano and Nakahara [15] used accessory polysaccharides to form composites with wood MFC/nanocelluloses. The disintegrated wood celluloses were mixed with starch as a binder and then hot-pressed between porous metal plates. Using a starch content of 2 wt %, the bending strength reached 310 MPa, compared to 250 MPa for unmodified fibers. Concurrently, the Young s modulus decreased from 16 to 12.5 GPa. When the starch content was 20 wt %, the bending strength decreased to 270 MPa. This indicates that added starch may act not only as a binder but also as a plasticizer. [Pg.63]

The use of PVC wood, which includes PVC foam and PVC/wood flour composite, as an alternative to wood and wood-like products is discussed. Compared with traditional products, the PVC wood is shown to exhibit improved termite resistance and weathering resistance, lower moisture absorption and ease of installation. It is demonstrated that PVC wood can be nailed, screwed, sawed, cut and bonded like wood by conventional tools without any special skills being required. The bending strength of PVC wood is lower, but it can still be used for... [Pg.87]
