Glass composites

AH commercial as well as most experimental glass-ceramics are based on siUcate bulk glass compositions. Glass-ceramics can be further classified by the composition of thek primary crystalline phases, which may consist of siUcates, oxides, phosphates, or borates.

A visible sign for the phase separation is that glass exhibits increasing opalescence with increasing temperature. Because the pore sizes are regulated with the annealing temperature (at a constant time and composition) glass becomes completely opaque near the temperature limit of the miscibility gap (800 C).

The suitability of a slag for use in a composite cement depends primarily on its reactivity, though grindability and contents of water and of undesirable components, especially chloride, must also be considered. Reactivity most obviously depends on bulk composition, glass content and fineness of grinding, though these are probably not the only factors and the relations with composition and glass content are complex. 

In addition to reeycling glass by its use in cement-based composites, glass aggregates can be used aesthetieally in this composite, which can give a shiny clean finishing effect on the smface of the cement product. 

Glasses along the (Na20)/Si02)i i series have also been studied by Si NMR (Stebbins, 1987 Selvaray et al., 1985). Stebbins (1987) demonstrated, for sodium silicate glasses, the existence of polymerized species not dictated by the stoichiometry (e.g., in NajSijO composition glass), which in crystalline form contains entirely species. Silicate glasses resist corrosive elfcets of atmosphere, water, aqueous solutions as well as other reagents. They generally resist acidic media better than alkaline media. However, chemical durability depends considerably on glass composition glass of unsuitable composition will lose its gloss and become coated with a white layer under the effect of atmosphere containing moisture. In many instances, chemical durability is the main criterion in the choice of a suitable material. 

Use Weed killer, cotton defoliant, fireproofing compositions, glass manufacture, B supplement for tree fruit and truck crops. 

Figure 8.2 shows the effect of particle spacing on the tensile properties of a glass bead filled composite. Glass beads addition typically decreases the tensile strength properties of a composite.
