Components, rocks, soil silicon

Silicon and aluminum oxides and hydroxides are the most abundant compounds on our earth. They exist in rock, soil, the dust we breathe, and as components or trace components in just about all we touch or consume. Over decades, they have made their appearance in a number of segments of medicine such as fibrotic diseases, tumor induction, Alzheimer s disease, and aluminum related bone diseases. Of these Alzheimer s disease is perhaps one of the most serious diseases in our society. Here a still mysterious role of "aluminum" is observed and acknowledged by many researchers. [Pg.17]

The nuclei of iron are especially stable, giving it a comparatively high cosmic abundance (Chap. 1, p. 11), and it is thought to be the main constituent of the earth s core (which has a radius of approximately 3500 km, i.e. 2150 miles) as well as being the major component of siderite meteorites. About 0.5% of the lunar soil is now known to be metallic iron and, since on average this soil is 10 m deep, there must be 10 tonnes of iron on the moon s surface. In the earth s crustal rocks (6.2%, i.e. 62000ppm) it is the fourth most abundant element (after oxygen, silicon and aluminium) and the second most abundant metal. Silicon dioxide is the main component of the crust of the earth. Combined with the oxides of magnesium, aluminum, calcium, and iron, it forms the silicate minerals in our rocks and soil. [Pg.14]

Silicon reactions are central to rock weathering and soil development. Silicon is the soil component lost in greatest amount from rock minerals during weathering, and the transformations of silica into secondary minerals are the major reactions of soil development. The sand fraction of soils is usually >90% quartz (SiC>2), the most prevalent form of Si in soils. Highly weathered soils may contain as little as 20% Si (Table 2.1a). A1 and Fe ore deposits are essentially highly weathered soils from which most of the Si has been lost. [Pg.45]
