Since tetrahydroharman can come from the union of tryptamine and acetaldehyde, and since both of these compounds are natural components in the body, it is not surprising that tetrahydroharman is also a natural body factor. And, since ethanol is metabolized by way of acetaldehyde, the body level of tetrahydroharman closely reflects the amount of alcohol that had been consumed. A parallel reaction takes place in the human body between acetaldehyde and the neurotransmitter serotonin. What of the death toll The most conservative estimates were 3,000 at the time, with about 200,000 injured. More recent estimates suggest that 16,000 people may have died as a result of the accident. How did it happen The factory, which was owned by the American Union Carbide company, was making Sevin, or carbaryl, an insecticide. Methyhsocyanate was one of the components of the synthesis, of which a large amount was stored in a tank. It seems that water was able to enter the tank via a newly fitted pipe because of a faulty valve. The water caused a reaction when it mixed with the methyhsocyanate, producing heat, which raised the temperature to such an extent that the liquid chemical boiled and was converted into a gas, which overwhelmed the containment system. It seems there was no trap to contain the excess, no flare system, and the scrubber system was overloaded. It was clear that the safety systems were inadequate. [Pg.173]

The synthesis of thiazole boronic acids is quite complicated. In fact, attempts to prepare 2-thiazoleboronic acid were unsuccessful [27]. As a consequence, the Suzuki reaction involving thiazoles is only possible when the thiazole component serves as the electrophilic coupling partner. Halothiazoles have shown the greatest utility in this regard. For instance, 2,5-di-(2-thienyl)thiazole (45) was prepared by the union of 2,5-dibromothiazole and easily accessible 2-thiopheneboronic acid [27]. Unfortunately, the yield was poor and analogous reactions of 2,5-dibromothiazole with 3-thiopheneboronic acid and 2-selenopheneboronic acid both failed. [Pg.352]

Their homogeneous catalyst consists of a Cu+ compound and an alkali methoxide, and the hydrogenation component is believed to be the copper hydride CuH.
